“Sadly, My Dream Job As a Physician Only Resides in My Head!”

Does this sound like something you’ve thought? We hope not! This article will help you to more realistically define your physician job expectations.

You’ve made the decision to find a new job. As a Physician, you have a lot of options. After skimming through new listings on all of the local job boards, you are left dissatisfied. None of the jobs stick out as a clear ‘winner’. After a few days of this, you start to put your job search on the back burner, focusing on your current practice that your heart just isn’t in. Don’t fall into this trap! The supposed job that checks all of your boxes may never come up. But there are a lot of opportunities out there that are a step in the right direction. Here are some tips that should help you decide whether or not a job is a good fit for you;

Prioritize What is Important to You

Take some time prior to searching for new doctor opportunities and really self-reflect. Create a list of amenities and benefits that you are looking to gain from a new position. Then, once you’ve listed as many as you can think of, narrow this down to 5 to 10 items. At that point, prioritize them in order of importance. The new job should meet at least 3 of your top 5 needs, with #1 being a deal breaker. You don’t want to have any remorse about your decision to move. This method is great for helping you realize what you’re really looking for.

Weigh the Pros and Cons

Once you’ve started to find some opportunities that are a match, you’ll want to look at all of the pros and cons of the advertised opportunity. Meet with the clinic or health centre, get all the details you can, and formulate a realistic overview of the job. This helps to address uncertainties. When you do this, keep in mind that there will be cons in every job. It’s still work after all!

Be Realistic

The most important thing that you can do is be realistic. If you are unhappy at your current opportunity, you shouldn’t wait to find the perfect opportunity. It’s easy to fall into a trap of just going to work every day because it’s habit. You need to make a change, and there may still be jobs out there that are a better fit, albeit not what you envisioned when you first set out to look.
